About Del Forte After graduating with honors from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco in 1999, Tierra Del Forte headed to New York City to design for Mudd Jeans, where she honed her skills as a denim designer. Tierra then took her talent and experience to Younique Clothing and continued to build her expertise in denim in all stages from design to production. While at these companies, she traveled throughout Europe researching trends and visiting factories in Hong Kong, mainland China and North America. Visiting these domestic and international garment factories opened Tierra’s eyes to the destructive impact that the fashion industry has on the environment and on the people who make the clothing. In 2005, she returned to California with this new awareness and a desire to focus on a more high-end, sophisticated and eco-conscious clientele. To accomplish this goal, Tierra started her line of premium organic denim, Del Forte Denim. Inspired as a young girl by her grandmother’s fabric collections, Tierra pulls images from vintage clothing and design. Combined with elements of design from nature and the raw materials themselves, Tierra creates a look that is contemporary but never trendy. Tierra eschews the logo-heavy look of most contemporary denim labels. Instead, she focuses on bringing beauty to every aspect of the garment, inside and out. With her deep concern about the environment and the rights of workers, Tierra has made a commitment to share her resources with the farmers, mill workers, and seamstresses whose hands bring her beautiful designs to life. In her own words… “I wanted to achieve my dream of creating my own premium denim line while protecting the environment and the farmers. One step that we can take to reduce the strain on the environment is to use fabric that is grown without chemical pesticides or insecticides. I am able to source beautiful, finely woven stretch denim made with 100 percent organically grown cotton. Organic is win-win for everyone. Customers love it, ecologically responsible mills get rewarded, organic farms profit, and I get to feel good about the fabric I use. Aside from being kind to the planet, the denim I’ve chosen is unbelievably soft and has the best recovery of any fabric I’ve ever used.” Tierra is a founding member of the Oaktown Stitchdown, a collaboration of San Francisco Bay Area designers that produced a series of seven fashion shows with all proceeds donated to The Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland, CA.
